Why I Hate Politicians?

Yesterday morning, one of Philippine Airlines’ (PAL) Boeing B777-300ER encountered an incident wherein the indicator light for one of the landing gears kept on blinking – telling the pilots that it may still be open while in flight.

It is standard operating procedure for pilots to go through first with the aircraft’s manual and try everything at their disposition to make the blinking indicator light go away. When pilots had exhausted all possible options they have on-hand and the problem still persist, it is now the call of the captain whether to turn back to the originating airport or go on straight with their flight (to their destination). In yesterday’s PR300 case, the pilot opted to go back to MNL (instead of continuing the flight to HKG).

Being someone who works in the aviation industry for almost two decades, what irates me most are politicians trying to look smart by commenting on something they, themselves do not know personally (or do not have basis at all). Classic example will be the Twitter posts of Risa Hontiveros below:

How can PAL be not safe without PALEA. Ms. Hontiveros, just in case you don’t know (which I presume that you really don’t know or aware of), the planes of Philippine Airlines are being maintained (outsourced to) by Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP). LTP is not owned by PAL. PALEA members are employees of PAL. Therefore, PALEA members have nothing to do with the maintenance of the PAL airplines.

Now, how can the planes of PAL be not safe without PALEA?

If you’re going to ask me, I guess PAL planes will be very much safer in the hands of non-PALEA member employees (sabotage, is that you?). What happened to PR300 yesterday was normal. Aircrafts do encounter things such as that from time to time – same goes with your car when it conks out during times you least expect it to happen.

The problem with some politicians (if not all) is that they yank and yank at issues without making their research first. Have basis on you say, please. Or better, watch GMA7’s Think First Before Your Click campaign ads. Good thing I did not voted for Ms. Hontiveros when she ran for a Senate seat last year.
